The Catechsis of the Good Shepherd program is a particular approach to the religious formation of very young children, ages 3 to 6 years.  It is rooted in Scripture, the Liturgy, and the educational principals of Maria Montessori.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is founded on the following principles:

~God and the child are already in a relationship, which must be honored and served with respect and reverence.

~The child is capable of grasping the greatest realities of faith.

~ Prayer, contemplation, and silence are natural components of the child's religious liffe and must be honored.

Children gather in an "atrium", a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful handmade materials, which the children use.  Children listen to a lesson each time, but choose their own "work" and work independently with materials, reflecting on the life of Jesus and the parts of the Liturgy.  There are six areas in the Atrium:

~Welcome Area- this is where the children gather and greet each other before entering the Atium.  They are taught how to walk (slowly and carefully) and talk ( softly) in the Atrium before they enter.

~ The Prayer Table Area- where the children and Catechist begin with an opening prayer and receive the presentation or lesson of the day.

~Practical Life Area- Pouring and cutting exercises prepare their little hands to do some of the work in the other areas.  This is also where the chilren find paper, scissors, colored penicils, and other things for expressing their reflections on the lessons or their relationship with God.

~ Historical Area- children learn about Jesus' life.  There are maps of Israel and the work of the Infancy Narratives- Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation and Visit of the Magi.  In the last year, they are presented the Last Supper and the Resurrection.

~Parable Area- the Parables of the Kingdom are the appropriate ones for the small child.

The Good Shepherd, the Mustard Seed, the Leaven, the Pearl of Great Value, the Buried Treasure, and the Seed all show the child that from something very small the Kingdom of God grows so big.

~ The Liturgy Area- a miniature altar that holds the articles of the mass is the focus of this area.  Children set the altar and learn the names of all that they touch as well as the gestures of the priest, the liturgical calendar and celebrations, and baptism.

Parents support this important work by bringing their children to the Atrium regularly.  With each presentation, the children deive further and deeper into the faith as we go along.

Particpation in the Catechesis will contribute to the spiritual growth of your entire family.
