             Trinity Episcopal Preschool

A member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, our preschool serves children ages 2 years 6 months to 5 years old from August to early June.  The weekly program includes music, exploring our world, art expressions, reading readiness activities, Chapel story time, constructive play time inside and out plus fellowship.

Unique features include letting children be children.  Children are encouraged to cooperate with others as well as increase their own sense of independence and strength.  We foster a Christian emphasis on social values and open children's minds to the wonder of creation and all God’s gifts who inhabit the earth.

Chapel, twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays under leadership of Mrs. Linda Apmadoc and Father Paul Price.

The preschool has been known in town as the “home away from home.”

Our History

Trinity Preschool began as a nursery school in 1950 with the affectionate name of TENS by which it is still called today.   Virginia Jennings was the founder and first director. In 1951 Floris Crosthwaite became the director, and it was she who purchased all the nursery school’s equipment.  By 1955 the school was under the care of Ms. Crosthwaite’s daughter, Floris Ethel, who maintained the school’s tradition until her mother’s return in 1957.  Ms. Crosthwaite guided the program for fifteen more years.

In 1972, Beverly Gaston was chosen by the Board of Directors to be the new director.  Ms. Gaston has the distinction of being the longest serving director of an Episcopal school in the Los Angeles Diocese.  The school today has preschool status and is licensed under the laws of the state of California with the Episcopal Schools Commission of Southern California serving as oversight.

What a wonderful learning space the garden in back of Cuyler House has become.  Students have had the opportunity to see how corn grows on the stalk and how pumpkin vines crawl across the grass.  They have smelled and compared the fragrances of basil, rosemary, and mint.  They have even taken crayons and paper to the garden for a session of “plein air” art.  Spanish enrichment moved to the garden this week so students could become familiar with the words for the tomatoes, squash, or corn that they have watched grow.

Music enrichment has also gotten started with Lorraine Jorgenson.  Always at the top of the list for the new year is the alphabet song. Music fosters such important listening skills and cooperative group efforts.

Fr Paul and Linda Apmadoc are getting started with chapel   Many of the children attending the preschool are unchurched or from another culture.  This gentle exposure to Christianity is one of the church's most important outreach opportunities.
